The estate and the wine
The estate and the wine A prodigy of Italian winemaking and elevated to the rank of “Super Tuscan,” Ornellaia has forever marked the history of world viticulture. With an exceptional vineyard heritage on one of Italy’s greatest terroirs, the estate enjoys a reputation that continues to soar, built on dazzling wines crafted with artisanal precision. Since 1981, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia has produced truly great wines that capture the imagination, including the legendary Masseto, now vinified as a cru in its own right.
Wine The 2022 Masseto Red captures the essence of its terroir with striking clarity. The wine’s deep, luminous color opens onto an expressive nose of red berries, kept vibrant by a refreshing lift. On the palate it shows impressive power yet never loses its poise, wrapped in a silky texture and effortless elegance. Time in bottle will polish its edges further, revealing that signature Masseto balance of intensity and refinement that collectors around the world chase after.
Vinification Harvesting is done by hand into 15-kg crates, with the grapes carefully sorted and destemmed by hand. Each parcel is vinified separately. Fermentation takes place in both steel and wooden vats, followed by a 21- to 28-day maceration at controlled temperatures between 25 and 28°C. Malolactic fermentation occurs in 100% new oak barrels, after which the lots are matured separately for 12 months. The wine is then blended and returned to barrel for another year, bringing total barrel aging to 24 months. After bottling, the wine is aged a further 12 months before release.
