Our committee's review
Ah, Côte-Rôtie… Who hasn’t dreamed of tasting it at least once in their life? We won’t lie — it’s one of our absolute favourite appellations.
Côte-Rôtie is one of the oldest vineyard areas in France. The story began over 2,500 years ago, when the Greeks arrived in the Rhône Valley and passed on the art of vine growing and winemaking. But it wasn’t until 1940 that the appellation was officially granted AOC status — a move to revive the wine trade in Ampuis.
Today, Côte-Rôtie spans just 330 hectares, and Syrah reigns supreme on the steep slopes of three Northern Rhône communes: Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône, Ampuis, and Tupins-et-Semons.
But the real magic of Côte-Rôtie lies in its mosaic of terroirs and named plots. Two neighbouring parcels can produce radically different wines. Some of the most famous include Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, La Landonne, La Turque, La Mouline, Côte Rozier, Les Rochins, Le Mollard, and Lancement…
We’ve selected a handful of truly essential estates — names revered by enthusiasts for capturing the classic soul of Côte-Rôtie. Never too rich, never over-oaked, and always defined by that stunning synergy between Syrah and the region’s unique mix of granite, mica-schist, and gneiss. These are wines of unmistakable class — and there’s nothing else quite like them.
(Re)discover the legendary Côte-Rôtie appellation and indulge in its deep, silky-textured wines with velvety tannins.
